Chapter Nine
THE PLANE started to move the moment our belts were fastened. We were running a little late; the traffic had been murder and we left Tokyo an hour later than we had planned. It all seemed like a curse to me, as if since that dreaded kiss in the club, everything was working against me, trying to keep me trapped into awkward closeness with Blake.
The morning after had started a long chain of awkward moves around each other, one-liner exchanges, and tons of avoidance. We struggled hard not to touch the other, yet always seemed to trip, stumble, and bump into each other, increasing the awkwardness level between us.
A whole freaking week of being pretty much alone, although Blake was one room away. We never talked, we never did anything together. Hell, we never even looked each other in the eye. To make it worse, my nightmares were back with a vengeance, but other than being left behind by Kieran and Kayden, I now had a sort of a sequel to my nightly terrors. After being abandoned by them, I’d walk around, aimlessly looking for Blake and never finding him.
I doubted Blake was faring much better. He had dark circles under his eyes and he wasn’t eating properly. Neither was I, but I’d always worry more about him than myself. I had royally screwed up our friendship so far. Great going!
Two hours into the flight, I couldn’t take it anymore. I just turned to face him and said what I felt.
“I’m sorry, Blake. I have no idea what came over me at the club.”
His eyes snapped to mine, wide with disbelief I couldn’t quite understand.
“Why the hell are you apologizing?”
“Well, because I kissed you and now we’re all awkward around each other. I hate feeling my best friend slipping through my fingers. I hate that I made you stay away from me with my actions.”
He cupped my face, forcing me to look into his eyes. “Shiki, you did not kiss me. I did not kiss you, we kissed each other. It wasn’t the action of just one of us. And the awkwardness of what followed is also a shared fault.”
I blinked a few times before nodding. He may have been right, but I still felt like a jerk. And I still was terrified to the core I was losing him.
“I just didn’t know what to say. I don’t know what we’re supposed to do now,” he murmured in a voice so low a human would have completely missed it.
“Same here. Maybe it was just what you said. A victory kiss after so much pent up sexual energy?” I smiled sheepishly, shrugging when he turned to stare at me.
“Yeah, maybe that was it.” He frowned and looked out the window, sounding about as convinced as I felt.
I slumped back into my chair and picked up the satellite phone. I called the leaders I was supposed to be meeting with upon arrival, telling them I’d be late. By the time I disconnected the call, I was swearing so loudly the co-pilot popped his head through the door.
